Rozanne:
On the 27th of May 2023, four Shandong University MBBS students and one student from Shandong University Central campus, from different grades and different countries, attended the Model United Nations Conference of the Shandong Province schools. Each representing their country, the five students, some dressed in their countries traditional clothes attended the conference. The event showcased songs, talent, theater production, art, food and dress from almost 50 different countries. Small stalls with food and dress and art were presented by different high school students. Theater productions in different languages, with different traditional stories and themes were performed and traditional cultural songs in different languages such as Dutch, German, French and Chinese were sung. Two of the Shandong University MBBS students had the opportunity to sing their country's National Anthem: The National Anthem of India and the National Anthem of South Africa were sung with the audience standing respectfully to hear each anthem. One student from Shandong University sang a traditional song from her country Mongolia.
Rachita:
As the representative of India, I had the opportunity to sing the National Anthem of India in front of a large crowd, which was such a surreal and memorable experience. It was an honour and a privilege to represent such a wonderful country, and I wanted to make sure that I did justice to it in the best way possible.
As I stood up to sing, my heart was filled with pride and emotions that I cannot describe in words. It was a special moment that I will treasure forever, and it was made possible thanks to our teachers, Ms June and Mr Liu, who gave us this fantastic opportunity.
This Model UN Conference has helped us grow as individuals and has encouraged us to think about the world outside of our own little bubble.
Joana:
It was very surprising to see not only the knowledge of the teenagers about each country represented in the event, but also the language skills learned in this school like French and Spanish. The short theatre play in French really impressed me due to the fluent and standard pronunciation of the young students. Students were very excited to have us there and to have the opportunity to use a foreign language, English in this case, to communicate with us. My main role was to interact with them, explaining where I am from, my culture, et al. They were extremely polite and warm-hearted, asked for taking pictures together in order to record this moment. I also enjoyed to watch my colleagues singing their National anthem and to meet other foreigners from other countries.
Participating in the event was a really grateful experience.
Rohan:
Before arriving, I was not sure on what to expect but once I arrived, I was lost for words. As it was a conference to showcase cultural dances, songs food etc, I was captivated by each aspect. All participants that contributed towards the occasion of this event can all be proud of themselves as it was very entertaining as well as educational about the world around us. From singing traditional songs of France, to trying delicious food from the middle east, the whole event was amazing. Not to mention the exceptional hospitality we received by the staff and students there. Everyone was very courteous and glad to see us there. Therefore, overall it was an amazing experience that I am grateful to be part of it.
