Recently, G2019 MBBS student Rachita Dinesh Kurmi, from India, co-authored the paper titled Comparison of efficacy and safety between gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy for primary open-angle glaucoma treatment: a retrospective cohort study was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
This study compared two surgical methods for the treatment of primary open Angle glaucoma (POAG) - gonioscopy assisted intrabeculectomy (GATT) and trabeculectomy (TRAB). The study examined 64 eyes over a 12-month period, assessing intraocular pressure (IOP), drug dependence, visual field stability, and complications. Both procedures effectively reduced IOP and drug use with similar success rates (GATT: 70%, TRAB: 76.5%). However, a difference in complications was noted: GATT led to more cases of hyphoma, while TRAB was associated with blister-related problems. The results of the study indicate that GATT is a viable alternative to TRAB, with considerable efficacy and unique safety profile.
