Recently, MBBS students, including myself, had the incredible opportunity to attend a Beijing Opera performance in Jinan, arranged by Shandong University. Our university provided transportation, and we were accompanied by the Director of International Student Affairs, Mr. Liu , who facilitated the entire trip. The opera we watched was based on the famous story "White Emperor City," a significant play that holds a deep connection with Chinese history, particularly during the Three Kingdoms period.
The story depicted in the opera revolves around the aftermath of the deaths of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, both prominent figures from the era. Their demise leads Liu Bei, the ruler of Shu, to attack the Kingdom of Wu in an attempt to seek revenge. Sun Quan, the ruler of Wu, tried to offer peace by sending Zhuge Jin to Liu Bei with Zhang Fei’s head, but Liu Bei, in his grief and anger, refused to reconcile. He vowed to avenge the death of his brothers. As Liu Bei prepared for battle, Sun Quan entrusted his army to Lu Xun, who tactically used the scorching weather to his advantage. Lu Xun set fire to Liu Bei’s army, burning 800 li of Shu’s battalions. Liu Bei was rescued by Zhao Yun, sent by Zhuge Liang, but he still lost the city of Baidi.
The opera continued as Liu Bei, filled with remorse and facing illness, summoned his trusted advisor, Zhuge Liang. On his deathbed, Liu Bei entrusted Zhuge Liang with the responsibility of protecting his son Liu Chen, urging him to safeguard the kingdom’s future. Despite his efforts, Liu Bei passed away in Yongan Palace, consumed by the unavenged deaths of his loyal brothers.
The two-hour performance was a mesmerizing display of traditional Chinese culture, with vivid costumes, expressive makeup, and powerful performances by the actors. It was an unforgettable cultural experience for all of us. We returned to the university feeling grateful to have witnessed such an iconic part of China’s artistic heritage.
This event was made even more special because we got to enjoy it with friends and fellow students, creating lasting memories together. We are truly thankful to university organizing this enriching experience, which allowed us to immerse ourselves in the rich traditions of Chinese opera.
