From October 24 to 26, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the “Reading China — Smart Connectivity in Qilu, Building Dreams for the Future” event, organized by Shandong University. It was a truly unforgettable three-day journey that allowed us to explore China’s advancements in intelligent construction, smart transportation, and cultural development — while also deepening our appreciation for the beauty of Shandong Province.
Day 1 — Engineering and Innovation
Our journey began on October 24 with a visit to the Engineering Training Center at Xinglongshan Campus. The visit was both inspiring and educational. We witnessed firsthand how technology and innovation are shaping China’s future, especially in the field of intelligent manufacturing and engineering education.
Later, we visited Jinan Heavy Industry Group’s Rail Transit Science Education Base, where we learned about the country’s achievements in rail technology. The staff were professional and enthusiastic, and the visit gave us a new perspective on the scale and precision of Chinese engineering.
Day 2 — Journey to Qingdao
The second day was filled with excitement as we traveled to Qingdao, one of China’s most beautiful coastal cities. On the way, we stopped at a service area, where the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We had the chance to try a variety of delicious Chinese snacks, which everyone enjoyed — from sweet pastries to spicy local specialties.
To our surprise, a small traditional performance was held there as well: two performers dressed in a vibrant dragon costume danced energetically to rhythmic drumbeats, bringing the mythical creature to life before our eyes. It was such a joyful and unexpected experience that perfectly captured the charm and cultural richness of China’s local traditions.
Afterwards, we continued our journey to visit the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge — an impressive engineering marvel that stretches across the sea, reflecting China’s world-class infrastructure capabilities.
In the afternoon, we attended a lecture titled “Insights on Telling China’s Stories” at the Qingdao Campus. The lecture encouraged us to think about how international students can act as cultural bridges and share the true image of China with the world.
Outstanding Teachers and Staff
Throughout the journey, we were accompanied by two amazing teachers whose dedication, patience, and care made the entire trip smooth and enjoyable. They were always attentive to every student’s needs — from ensuring our safety and comfort to helping with translation and coordination. Their positive attitude and professionalism truly represented the spirit of Shandong University. We are sincerely grateful for their guidance and support.
Wonderful Hotel Experience
We stayed at the Hotel in Qingdao, which exceeded all expectations. The hotel had an amazing seaside view — waking up to the sound of the waves and the fresh ocean breeze was absolutely refreshing.
The rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable, and the hotel staff were extremely polite and helpful. In particular, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Peter Zhong, whose warm hospitality and professionalism left a deep impression on everyone. He made sure all arrangements went perfectly and treated every guest with genuine kindness.
Day 3 — Exploring the Subsea Tunnel Project
On the third day, we visited the Jiaozhou Bay Second Subsea Tunnel Project Department. It was fascinating to learn about the technological innovations and safety systems involved in constructing such a complex underwater project. The engineers’ passion and professionalism reflected China’s commitment to excellence in infrastructure development.
Safe and Pleasant Travel
We also wish to sincerely thank our bus driver, who drove safely and patiently throughout the entire journey. He made sure everyone was comfortable, and his professionalism contributed greatly to the pleasant atmosphere of the trip. The entire transportation arrangement was well-organized and punctual, which made traveling between cities efficient and enjoyable.
Impressions of Qingdao and the Event
Qingdao left a deep impression on us — the sea, the clean air, the modern cityscape, and the friendly people all created a wonderful experience. The city is not only beautiful but also represents the perfect combination of modern technology and natural charm.
The “Reading China” event gave us a deeper understanding of China’s innovation, openness, and hospitality. It helped us see how far the country has come in developing smart transportation and sustainable construction, and it inspired us to share these positive experiences with others around the world.
Overall, the Reading China 2025 event was an unforgettable experience filled with learning, cultural exchange, and friendship. We are deeply thankful to Shandong University and all the staff members who made this event possible.
It strengthened our appreciation for Chinese culture, innovation, and kindness — and reminded us once again why China truly feels like a second home.
